The Glass Menagerie is a five-character memoir first published by Tennessee Williams in 1944, and it has made him famous ever since. The play is strongly autobiographical, with Williams using his real-world self, his neurotic mother, and his mentally vulnerable older sister, Rose, to create characters. In the process of writing, Williams referenced short stories from his early theatrical work The Suitors.
